Portable Crushing

We are your trusted partner when it comes to efficient and reliable portable crushing solutions.

Colwell Construction Company, Inc. (CCC) has been associated with the quarry and rock crushing industry since 1962. In the early years material (gravel) was excavated from alluvial deposits adjoining streams and rivers and processed with a small jaw crusher (18”x 24”) and a commander plant.

In 1968, CCC opened its first permanent quarry in Blairsville, Georgia, which is still in operation. Following the Blairsville operation, CCC opened a quarry in Dahlonega, Georgia in 1972 and another in Ellijay, Georgia in 1980. At the height of production and demand by the GA DOT, Blairsville and Ellijay produced 800,000 tons annually at each plant. All facets of materials were produced for both private and public use but with the heaviest demand being from the government for interstate highways.

In 1990, Vulcan Materials Company (VMC) purchased the operation of the quarries owned by CCC and continues to operate them today. Colwell Construction assists VMC in the striping operation and the removal of cap rock (low quality) and the development of plant sites as needed. Colwell Construction maintains ownership of the properties of the quarries that are operated by VMC.

Colwell Construction Co. began recycling concrete and assisting other companies that need higher production with portable crushing operations. The portable crushing operations began in 1984 and continued until 2001 when it was purchased by Vulcan Materials. However, on a limited basis, CCC has continued reprocessing asphalt, rock, and concrete internally for uses at CCC in regards to its asphalt plants, road construction, site areas, and residential needs.

In 2005, VMC installed new rock crushing equipment in 2005 at the Blairsville, GA location beginning with a 36” x 46” jaw crusher, (2) 5 ½’ cones, (3) screening towers, and numerous conveyors in order to increase production to +500 tph. At that time, CCC repurchased much of the crushing equipment originally sold to VMC and is listed below.

CCC crushed rock for the Cherohala Highway in phases as approximately 10 miles of new road were constructed throughout the Appalachian Mountains by various Prime Contractors with the owner being the United States Federal Highway Administration.

The above numbers do not include the supplemental crushing that was performed over the same years at CCC’ S three (3) permanent location to meet the demands of the market. CCC during this period had two portable operations that were continually relocated as required.

Colwell Construction crushed both concrete and rock (granite, limestone, etc.) making many different finished products. The heaviest demand was for a graded aggregate base that met GA DOT, NC DOT, and Federal specifications respectively. Other products included rip rap 12”-24” (300mm-600mm), 3” (75mm), 1 ½” (38mm), Gabion stone 4” (102mm), various sands, and fine aggregate products.

Colwell Construction has always taken pride in its ability to meet the gradation and production requirements needed to meet the needs of its customers. Throughout CCC’S history, it has been punctual in its operations and willing to deviate its product line as demand changes for various other products. Carlton Colwell and his sons, Steve and Curtis, provide a combined total of more than 120 years of experience in the quarry and rock crushing business. They are active today in aggregate materials concerning asphalt plants, roads, private and public projects on a daily basis and have hands on involvement in CCC.
